The old give way to the new, often painfully,
rather smoothly. The architectural scene in Kerala is no
different. The finest of old Kerala architecture today is
displayed in posh drawing rooms all over the globe in bits
salvaged from demolition contractors. An acute shortage of good
quality timber is being felt in the state today and as a result,
price of timber is rising day by day. Conventional species take
decades to mature. Further more, the pressure on the land could
reduce the area under forest.
Not all the dismantled architecture is representative of the
bygone culture and architectural expertise. By recycling these
demolished timber, significant improvement can be made in the
supply of conventional timber products. |

Wood has universal appeal and local skilled
carpenters who are familiar with both the production and repair
are available in plenty. With the development of synthetic
adhesives and improved connectors, timber is fast regaining its
lost glory in Kerala.
With this new development, let us hope that the golden days of
timber in Kerala architecture is still to come. Let us redefine
our own tradition |
